OOC Backstory
Although The Castellan is a recurring role on Doctor Who, the role that might normally, in a castle, be held by The Castellan's wife, The Chatelaine, has never been played or written in any real Doctor Who story except mine. I created The Chatelaine in about 1986 using the old Doctor Who FASA RPG.
Her official role was to be the "keeper of the Timelord's keys." The Baker "Key to Time" episodes were some of my favorite.
As to her role, I envisioned it as a Lower Council complement to The Castellan; the House rather than the Senate, if you will. In The Chatelaine's backstory, the previous Chatelaine did not want to retire, so our girl got lots of extra time training on Gallifrey before she was thrown out into the world.
As The Chatelaine, she is able to look at a thing and have a good chance of seeing how "to open" it; simple locks are generally no problem at all, but even complex situations, once they begin to present connected lines to the future, can be negotiated using the proper "key." And that is The Chatelaine's loomed aptitude, skill, and training.
This requires that The Chatelaine meditate every day in order to connect to The Eye of Harmony. If her connections to The Eye are not rigorously maintained, her related abilities correspondingly decrease. In mathematical terms, we might say that she loses one point of ability per day that she is not able to meditate.
I imagined that she is Arcalian Chapter but that she spent a good deal of time with the House of Patrexes also, since connection to the Eye is an artful act and often requires creative imagination.
One of Chatelaine's assignments, and this is the one that I am currently playing for the most part, included living an entire lifespan with King Arthur's Queen; the backstory includes the idea that a fixed point in time exists when Gwenhwyfar is at the nunnery and rejects both Arthur and Lancelot, and this time must be protected. Additionally, the fact that many Timelords want to visit Arthurian times creates the potential for dangerous paradoxes when they meet, so The Chatelaine is also on assignment here as these cruxes of history play out across cultures and alternate tellings.
